But-- Hanbei's face actually falls a bit. Because he wants to take Red's words to mean that he's met people in the CDC who knew about war, but he drops the words 'Pokémon training', and he knows he's talking about his home world.
Even in a world that's easy to sleep in, war is real. It's everywhere.]
Think about it this way. If you work hard for the CDC, you can make sure your world never has to go through war again.
[ There's a question that comes because of that, but it's hard to right out say it. Red's expression shifts, brows lowering and mouth pursing tighter, and there's a struggle of whether it's a question even right to ask. He shouldn't be asking this- no person should be asking this-
But despite the struggle, he spits it out (because if Hanbei does know war like he says, wouldn't he know the answer?) ] How? How do you fight like that?
[ Too much innocence can strike down even the most strongest of fighters.
It's why it takes Charizard so long to move, though he watches between the two as they speak (with only his trainer's emotions to lead him through the conversation), though he sees the weapon move, though he sees it coming --
There may have been no stopping it had it been allowed to hit, him rested on his belly and the weapon more ready than he, but it doesn't matter, just as it doesn't that it didn't even graze Red. Hanbei's words get near drowned out by the thunderous sound that pushes out deep from Charizard's lungs right after them, passing by the full set of teeth and fangs bared. He's up in the same instant, the flame on his tail roaring with a new angry energy, the tail bashing hard into the ground once to leave a deep dent.
Charizard's head snaps back down and there's a monstrous look on his face beyond his natural features directed right at Hanbei, claws out like they're surely for the strategist -- before they lower close around the young boy protectively, down as well his wings to shield him, and it's only by then that his roar has decreased to a snarl still vicious, vibrating against the roof of his mouth.
And where Charizard burns, Red's frozen like stone, staring wide-eyed and blank.
But he's not still, and he's not blank, because his heart is going as fast as it had out there in the burning forest with the wails of the also burning neraki, and he's aware of Charizard's scream filling in his ears again and senses the heat above him when the next roar comes with the flames that he means to use to obliterate that weapon--
But only slivers of fire from the build up in his mouth comes out, licking the air above, as he feels the yank of one of his arms from both of Red's, the sound of his trainer's voice under his: ] Charizard, don't!
[ The giant lizard's head and neck waves, struggling between obedience and fear for his trainer's life, and when the flames eventually do die down, Charizard's cries don't. He wails loudly towards the skies until looking back down to Hanbei once more, his jaws making a snapping motion that sends out a harsh bark his way but not snapping down fully in hostility.
It takes a while for the pokémon to quiet down. It takes a while until the beast stops kicking his feet and struggling, until he's only huffing from his snout and whining from inside a shut jaw, and until Red can be heard through it, repeating the pokémon's name
It's funny, because he was afraid yesterday, of Charizard howling and snapping his head right off. But now, it'd be almost an ironic end, even though he noticeably takes a step back so his clothes don't burn. He's gotten so desensitized to things howling at his face, that the only reason he doesn't continue smiling that damn smile is because--
He feels terrible for them both, but there's nothing he can do except tell them to fight.
Or else someone else will, and maybe by then, it'll be too late.
He's seen it happen.
(Hanbei promised to look over him, but his corpse was turned to dust along with the rest of Ajna. And he promised to stay with her, but she somehow disappeared into nothing while his compass sliced off the head of the person he trusted most.
"You're like a goddess," but goddesses don't blip into nonexistence like that, with only the Instructor's words to believe.)]
You have to fight too, so Charizard doesn't carry all the fighting on his shoulders.
[And you may fall before you learn how to.
It's normal.]
don't care if i don't get in, thread is flawless, a+ tyvm
[ 'You can't be afraid to use it,' d'Artagnan had said, after showing him how to use his gun.
Red's words turn softer, the space between each one growing further apart. He's holding onto him tightly, so tightly, stroking with one free hand along what of the pokémon he can touch. It's the first he's ever been so furious, but Red doesn't think about that.
He fixates on Hanbei's words, right around when his own finally fade and Charizard's feet have steadied but his body is left trembling. 'You and Charizard, you both have to stay safe.'
He knows. (He knows, and he still couldn't shoot.)
There's not a why or a how in him now. No questions left. There's only his companion standing so strongly, the one he has to protect, and the fear of killing another that he never knew he would have to face.
His fingers grip into Charizard. ]
I don't want him to fight alone.
[ He doesn't speak thinking about whether he can be heard. ]
It crawls out of Hanbei's hat, before jumping right on the floor, and walking up to Charizard without any fear. Because it hasn't seem him roar, only seen him licking huskberries off the ground with everyone else.
That's... kind of anti-climatic.]
Sorry, did I scare you that much? [And suddenly, he's right back to smiling, compass still lying a few meters away.] Maybe I went too far that time.
But remember, when you fight, whoever you're fighting against won't hold back.
[ Lothlo doesn't read the thread, doesn't bring Starbucks--
Charizard eyes the lothlo and eyes Hanbei, hellbent on not withdrawing his wings and himself from over Red. He doesn't care for how the ground had been plentiful with his type before, some at awe of his flame and his entire being. He's a pokémon on guard alright.
It's Red that makes him move, with no room with Charizard surrounding him for him to move himself. ] Charizard, it's okay...
[ Except it's not okay, not to Charizard. But he doesn't fight as much as he could when Red picks himself up onto his feet, blowing steam out from his nose with the fire on the end of his tail still crackling loud. The hot air doesn't catch Red but it's too close and too dangerous, and he revolts back in a way that makes Charizard whine heavily with worry, but the boy calms him down again. It's fine, it's fine.
The wings draw back. Hesitantly. And not without a sharp glare to both the lothlo and Hanbei (but mostly Hanbei; look lothlo things happened). Charizard won't leave Red's side, and Red doesn't ask him to.
It takes a moment for the boy to look away from the ground at the lothlo, and up to Hanbei's face. ]
[The lothlo eventually gets the hint and hides behind Hanbei's legs, which is funny, considering who was the person who started this whole thing.]
--Come on, go and get back to the rest of your family. [He turns his head to the ground and nudges the lothlo with the back of his foot, trying to chase it away. After a few seconds that might've been tenser than they should be, it finally scrambles away, into the bushes and away from the scene.]
That's good. And that also means you're not allowed to die here, alright? Not on Macha or anytime you're with the CDC.
[Same goes for Charizard, really.
He's smiling, still, but it comes off as a little more strained than he'd like it do.]
[ It's a hard thing to promise not to die. Red doesn't think to promise it anyway (it's just a thought that doesn't occur to him), the conversation at least quietening him up some.
But he nods to the question, and he still has a voice. ]
...Yeah. [ but ] You didn't come out here for anything else?
[ There's a good chunk of fruit in the bag handed and some in the one on his back, but while he could get some more now, maybe it would be better to wait.

Hanbei casts a glance towards Charizard, looks at his compass, and does something he would've never done if he didn't join the CDC.]
If you don't want to fight to destroy--
[He suddenly picks his compass and tosses it right at Red.
Yanking his left hand makes it shift at the absolutely last moment before slamming onto the floor, passing centimeters from Red's face.]
Then you have to fight to live.
[Use your fear first.
That should be enough. For now.]
